Brooms and mops usually have a hole at the top of their handles so that you can hang them on a hook. This makes it easy to store them, but screwing in hooks is not always possible, nor is it necessarily the best solution. If space allows, you could get a caddy made especially for brooms, mops, or anything that has a handle, such as gardening tools and the like. Some of these are free-standing floor models, while other have to be mounted on a wall.
Here’s two examples – I picked the one on the left because it looks nice enough to be exposed in a kitchen. The one on the right however would be better kept in a garage, I think:
